The Bay of Islands is one of New Zealand’s richest marine and island ecosystems, offering an incredible diversity of native wildlife, protected island sanctuaries and spectacular coastal scenery.

Moturua Island is one of six protected wildlife sanctuary islands in the Bay of Islands. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Project Island Song, a local conservation group, and the Department of Conservation (DOC), these islands have remained pest-free since 2009. This achievement has allowed for the successful reintroduction of eight native species between 2012 and 2022, creating a vital refuge for threatened wildlife.

During your private sailing charter, you’ll have the opportunity to explore Moturua Island’s lush native bush, enjoy stunning sea views, and listen to vibrant birdsong. While exploring the island trails, keep an eye out for native birds such as the North Island robin, red saddleback, whitehead, tūī, fantail, and kererū.

Every day on the water is different, making wildlife encounters one of the highlights of every charter.

Keep an eye on the surrounding waters as we sail between islands—you may spot playful bottlenose dolphins travelling through the sheltered channels, stingrays gliding beneath the surface, or schools of fish in the crystal-clear bays. Seabirds are a constant companion, and if you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of the world’s smallest penguin, the little blue penguin (kororā), around the offshore islands.

Stingrays and eagle rays
Little blue penguins (Kororā)
Terns, gannets and other seabirds
Occasionally orca, New Zealand fur seals and bronze whaler sharks

The Bay of Islands forms part of a protected marine mammal sanctuary, helping safeguard dolphins, whales and other marine species for future generations.

At Bayscapes, we are committed to responsible wildlife viewing and always follow Department of Conservation guidelines. This means allowing animals to behave naturally, observing them from a respectful distance, and avoiding unnecessary disturbance. Every encounter is on nature’s terms, ensuring these incredible species continue to thrive in the wild.
