Discover Moturua Island: A Wildlife Sanctuary In The Bay Of Islands

Moturua Island is one of six protected wildlife sanctuary islands in the Bay of Islands. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Project Island Song, a local conservation group, and the Department of Conservation (DOC), these islands have remained pest-free since 2009. This achievement has allowed for the successful reintroduction of eight native species between 2012 and 2022, creating a vital refuge for threatened wildlife.

When you join a Bay of Islands day cruise, you can explore Moturua Island’s lush native bush, enjoy stunning sea views, and listen to vibrant birdsong. While exploring the island trails, keep an eye out for native birds such as the North Island robin, red saddleback, whitehead, tūī, fantail, and kererū. Many of the islands in the Bay of Islands are part of conservation programmes that protect and restore native bird populations.

These organizations are committed to restoring thriving ecosystems through extensive reforestation. Over 40,000 native trees, including Kauri, Kawakawa, Mānuka/Kānuka, and Kōwhai, have been planted since 2009, helping to bring the islands’ natural habitats back to life.
