Sailing Charters Departing from Paihia

Bayscapes Charters runs sailing charters departing from Paihia, right in the heart of the Bay of Islands. We’re not a booking platform or a listing site, we’re the operator. Our boat, our crew, departing from Paihia.

If your search for Paihia boat charters has turned up page after page of global yacht rental listings, this is different. Bayscapes is sailing out of Paihia regularly through the season, close to daily over peak summer (mid December to February), and the people who answer your enquiry are almost always the same people who’ll be sailing you out.

The Paihia Departure

Shared sailing charters depart from Paihia Wharf at 69 Marsden Road, a short walk from the town centre. There is no set berth, so look for our catamaran with the blue sail pack and Bayscapes in white lettering, and please check in 10 minutes before departure. The most reliable parking is the paid carpark on Williams Road, a 5 minute walk from the wharf. Free street parking is available but can be hard to find in summer. There’s no need to travel to Opua or further afield first, you park, walk to the wharf, and you’re on the water within minutes. Private charters also depart from Paihia Wharf, with pickup from Russell or Waitangi Wharf available on select days.

Sailing Charters in the Bay of Islands

From the wharf, the boat heads out into the open waters of the Bay of Islands. The first main island, Roberton Island (Motuarohia), is usually reached after 1 to 1.5 hours of sailing. Depending on conditions on the day, the crew may choose to anchor at Okahu, Waewaetorea, Urupukapuka, Moturua, Motukiekie, or Roberton Island (Motuarohia), whichever offers the most shelter that day. The exact island depends on weather, tide, and what the group wants to see, which is one of the advantages of chartering with a local crew rather than following a fixed marketplace itinerary.

The sail out is part of the day, not just the way to get there. Whether you’re on the 2 hour Afternoon Cruise or the full Day Charter, you’re under sail from the moment you leave Paihia, taking in the bay as the crew works the boat.

Real Pricing, No Guesswork

Sailing charters departing from Paihia with Bayscapes are priced clearly in New Zealand dollars. Shared charters are priced per person, and private charters are priced for the whole boat. There are no hidden fees and no quotes that shift once you enquire. Check live pricing and availability on our booking page

If you have come across yacht rental prices elsewhere running into the thousands per week, that is a different market entirely. Those figures are usually for hiring an entire yacht, often with a minimum multi day booking. A shared charter with Bayscapes is priced per person for a single day, which makes it accessible for couples, families, and small groups, and a private charter gives your group the whole boat for the day.

Why Choose a Local Operator

Bayscapes is not a marketplace connecting you to a boat owner somewhere else. We are the operator. Our crew know the Bay of Islands, the tides, the weather, and the best spots to stop, swim, and explore on any given day. When you book with us, you are booking directly with the operator running your trip, not submitting an enquiry to a listing and waiting on a response from someone who may not even be in the country.

That local knowledge shows up in small ways that matter on the day, knowing which bay is sheltered when the wind picks up, which spot has the clearest water for snorkelling that week, and when to adjust the plan rather than stick rigidly to a set route.

What You Will Experience

A sailing charter departing from Paihia means genuine time on the water among the Bay of Islands’ 144 islands, not a rushed loop past a few headlands. The Day Charter, Sail and Stop and Sail and Hike all build in at least one proper stop, usually a quiet bay or beach away from the main tourist routes, where the anchor goes down and the day slows right down.

On charters with an island stop, the crew will find a sheltered bay for swimming and snorkelling, and the water around the outer islands is some of the clearest in Northland. Paddleboards are part of the experience too. Little blue penguins are spotted on most days. Dolphins turn up around once a week, but we are not licensed for marine mammal viewing, so we only see them if they happen to cross our path and we never chase them.

For groups doing the Sail and Hike option, there’s a walking component on one of the islands, usually with views back across the bay that make the walk worthwhile. Sail and Stop is built around time at anchor rather than covering distance, better suited to groups who want to relax rather than sightsee continuously.

The pace throughout is set by the crew based on the day’s conditions and the group on board, not by a fixed script. For more on what a day out looks like, see our guides to things to do in the Bay of Islands and snorkelling spots around the islands.

Practical Information

Duration: Shared charters run as either the 2 hour Afternoon Cruise or the 6 hour Day Charter. Private charter duration depends on the option booked.

What to bring: A hat, sunglasses, a water bottle, a towel and swimwear. Sunscreen is provided on board, so please leave yours at home, as some sunscreens can damage the paintwork on the boat. Snorkelling gear and paddleboards are available on board, though bringing your own gear ensures the perfect fit. See our full packing guide for the complete list.

Best time of year: Our sailing season runs from September to May. The warmer months from November through April offer the best conditions for swimming and snorkelling.

Weather: Charters depend on weather and sea conditions on the day. If conditions aren’t suitable, Bayscapes will be in touch to reschedule rather than run a charter in poor conditions.

What Our Guests Say

If you enjoy sailing and getting a great perspective of the Bay of Islands from out on the water you will love this little charter cruise. Brand and Monique do a great job of sharing a bit of history of New Zealand while exploring several of the bays and islands. A stop for a swim/snorkel and a short hike followed by a hearty lunch box before, wind permitting, a brisk sail back to the Paihia marina. The catamaran is very clean, well kept and spacious enough for all the guests. It’s great to see a young local couple own and operate their own charter.
